Vardy: Age is just a number for me, there is no sign that I will slow down at the moment
Recently, Vardy said at a press conference for joining Serie A team Cremonese that he was eager to prove that the person who questioned him was wrong.
When the reporter asked Valdi if his speed would drop as he approached 40, Valdi retorted: "You must be one of those skeptics, and I have to prove you wrong. To me, age is just a number. As long as my legs work as before and feel fresh, I will continue to play, and there is no sign that they will slow down at the moment."
Just like the situation that I often faced when I was at Leicester City, the newly promoted Kremonese needs to work hard to stay in Serie A and are predicted to have difficulties this season. Valdy said he decided to join the team after a long Zoom call with Cremonese coach David Nicola.
Valdi said: "Just looking into his eyes and seeing what he wants, it really touched me. As a football player, we always want to feel like we are needed. After talking to the head coach and the club owner, our main task is to make sure we stay in the league. Honestly, I was the same when I was in Leicester City."
Of course, Vardy did a lot more than just helping Leicester City avoid relegation, he also led the team to win the Premier League title in 2016. In that historic season, he scored 11 consecutive goals, setting a record.
Valdi said: "We never thought about 'we're going to fight for this', but always thought about 'we need to stay in the top league', which is the most important thing. So you can only try your best one game after another, and the result will naturally come. At that time we won a lot of games, and that's football."
Cremonese won two consecutive victories at the beginning of the season, first defeating AC Milan away and then defeating Sassuolo at the last minute. Valdi said: "11-to-11, anyone can beat anyone, so we will go all out on the training ground to make sure we are ready for every game. Play one game after another and see where it will end up going."
38-year-old Valdy signed a one-year contract with Cremonese with the option for the second year after 13 seasons at Leicester City. He will wear the No. 10 jersey and may make his debut against Verona on Monday.
Cremonese sports director Simeone Jaketa said: "His story is about dreams come true, it's a dream we share. We are delighted to have a role model showing how to turn from ordinary people into special people through values."
Vardi also mentioned that playing under Maresca had adapted to Serie A defensive tactics: "People say I can't adapt to this style, but I still scored 20 goals that season, and never think I can't learn anything."
Vardi also thanked the Italian, Ranieri, who once coached at Leicester City and now serves as a Rome adviser, for his recommendation: "I know he said good things to the head coach, so I can't let him down."
