Busquets talks about retirement: After a well-thought-out decision, my football story will end here
Miami International midfielder Busquets was interviewed and talked about his decision to retire at the end of the season, reasons for retirement, and reunion with former Barcelona teammates.
You have recently announced your decision to retire at the end of the season. Can you talk about this decision?
This is a decision I made after careful consideration, although I announced it only a few days ago. Ultimately, this is the universal law of life, football, and sports. I'm very happy with everything. But now I focus on the rest of the FC League, focus on the league games, and strive to get the highest ranking possible so that I can meet the playoffs in the best way.
What is the specific reason for making this decision?
It's obvious that I know this is the last year of my contract. When you have been through so many years, so many competitions, so many travels, in the end, not just physically but mentally, it’s what you want. My family and I think it was the best decision and my football story will end there.
What do you think about reunion with Messi, Alba and Busquets in Miami and playing under the coaching of Mascherano?
I always say that I am glad to be reunited with great teammates, great friends, great people again. Ultimately, so is football, isn’t it? It all happened and we are here to enjoy trying to continue our career with other goals in another place. It's great to be reunited with your teammates, both on the same team and as an opponent. Ultimately, this is what football can leave you, and it is the best thing.
What does it mean to you if you win the AP League championship before retirement?
As I said before, we will try to get the highest ranking possible in the regular season in order to get a home advantage in the playoffs, which is very important. I hope to end my career with a champion I still lack, and that’s what we’ve fought for all year.
